From firefighting to root-cause problem solving
How teams can stop fixing the same problems repeatedly by separating symptoms from causes and building a simple improvement routine.
Published
Firefighting feels productive. Problems are solved quickly and people are visibly busy. But when the same fires keep returning, the organisation is paying repeatedly for a problem it never removes.
Separate the fix from the cure
A quick fix protects the customer today. A root-cause fix prevents the problem tomorrow. Both are needed — the mistake is stopping after the first.
A five-step routine
- Describe the problem precisely: what, where, when and how often.
- Contain it so customers are protected while you investigate.
- Ask “why?” repeatedly until you reach a cause you can act on.
- Change the process, not just the person involved.
- Check a few weeks later that the problem has actually stopped.
